Engineering Change for Female Engineers

Engineering Change for Female Engineers

The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) launched an inspiring new video about ladies in engineering during the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) convention not too long ago. The movie, Engineering Change, features quite a lot of outstanding business leaders, together with Michèle Dix, Managing Director, Crossrail 2 and Rachel Skinner, a Director at WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff, who speak in regards to the obstacles that women often face within the engineering world. In addition, they cite the necessity to make engineering careers more accessible by showcasing female engineers – not simply women who’ve reached the highest of the professional ladder but those that have managed to attain that while also having a family. We will only tap into this wider career pool by making ourselves more inclusive and enticing, and making this occur is a challenge for the entire industry. We’re able to begin with an open, candid dialogue about what’s holding us again and the steps that may be taken – in each a sensible and cultural sense – to allow a shift. We hope this movie, and the main inspirational figures who feature in it and wish to deliver change, actually kick starts this debate. Become involved with this debate on Twitter utilizing hashtag #engineeringchange. Poll Shows UK Residents Encourage Youth to Pursue Engineering

Poll Shows UK Residents Encourage Youth to Pursue Engineering

A recent poll that was conducted by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers that polled 1000 UK citizens on which profession they would recommend a young person enter into. According to the poll results, more people in the UK would recommend that young people become engineers than bankers, accountants, doctors. That’s pretty impressive, considering a typical doctor’s salary Out of the four professions that people could choose from in the poll, engineering was the most popular answer coming in first with 86%. 80% thought doctor should be the profession that young people pursue. Accountants came in third place with 56%, and the least favorite answer was banker with just 36% These poll results indicate that engineering could be a career that’s on the rise. The UK faces a shortfall of 30K engineers each year in the education system. These poll results show that there is a demand for engineering, but whether or not more young people will be swayed towards the profession remains to be seen. With so many different fields of engineering, it’s a very diverse career to get into. There’s still a lot that needs doing in order to make sure the number of UK engineers continues to increase, including offering career device to young people and building stronger relationships between employers and schools. Another big step in the right direction would be to shift the focus in the educational system to focus strongly on Science Engineering Technology and Math. The results of the poll were made public just before the Institution of Mechanical Engineers releases it’s newest set of research entitled “Big Ideas in Engineering...

Patrick Awuah,  an engineer who was previously employed by Microsoft, was just awarded the MacArthur Foundation’s Genius Grant, one of the greatest honors anyone in the world can achieve. So now not only will he become a MacArthur Fellow, he’s also being awarded $625,000. Mr. Awuah, who is a Ghana native, founded the Ashesi University back in 2002, and school located in Ghana. The university features a curriculum rich in ethical principles, liberal arts and hands on skills for modern needs and opportunities in Africa. Although from Ghana, Mr. Awuah studied in the United States and began his professional career when he got hired on with Microsoft just after graduating. It was his time spent studying in the U.S. that made him realize just how different the educational system was from that of Ghana, and so that when the idea for the Asheshi University was formed. The Ashesi University places a deep importance on business development and STEM skills, as well as gender diversity and ethics. One of the more recent topics, women in engineering, is being tackled by the university, who aims to have just as many female students enrolled as males in its engineering program that started earlier in the fall of...

OSHA To Host Meeting on Occupational Safety and Health June 17-18

OSHA has been creating new guidelines lately for various areas of concern for employees rights in the workplace, including restroom usage guidelines. They’ll also be holding an event discussing more issues in June, some of which you can read about below. Please note that the schedule of topics is currently tentative, and therefore subject to change.   The Occupational Safety and Health Administration, OSHA, released the news that they’ll be organizing a meeting of the National Advisory Committee on Occupational Safety and Health on June 17th-18th in Washington D.C. On June 17th The Temporary Workers Work Group will meet together, and on June 18th the rest of the group will meet.   The agenda for the event is subject to change, but as of now it will feature updates on OSHA efforts like the severe injury reporting rule. More topics to be covered at this OSHA event will include statements from the Emergency Response Subcommittee and a recent Temporary Workers Work Group report that documents the development of best practices, including protection of temporary workers that are members of injury and illness protection programs.   OSHA has also recently issued guidelines on restroom access for transgendered employees, a la Bruce Jenner, but I don’t think that will be covered in this meeting. If you’d like to speak at this OSHA event, please submit your request online at http://www.regulations.gov, or you can submit your request via mail or fax to the Federal e-Rulemaking...
Avoid Plant Shutdowns from Unforeseen Circumstances with These Three Solutions.

Avoid Plant Shutdowns from Unforeseen Circumstances with These Three Solutions.

Besides maintaining a high quality safe product, what would be one of the most important parts of manufacturing food? Consistency. You can’t leave your customers high and dry because an unforeseen event has left you facility out of operation. You have a responsibility to your clients, after all. If an unexpected turn of events leaves your plant’s operations on halted, you must know the ways for your company to continue production outside the walls of your facility. Co-packing, co-manufacturing and built-in redundancy are three solutions to keep your operations moving when your plant is down. Here are the key things to know about each. 1. Co-packers If you problem happens to be packaging your products, you may want to consider looking into co-packing. Co-packers are contractors that can help companies out when they’re in tight spots in order to fulfill client orders. 2. Co-manufacturers If your problem is that your facility can’t actually manufacture your product for whatever the reason may be, you may want to consider using a contracted manufacturer, commonly referred to as a co-manufacturer. In the same way that a co-packer helps with packaging your goods, a co-manufacturer helps your company out with the actual creation of your products. Whether you opt for a co-packer or a co-manufacturer, do not wait until you actually need them to reach out. It can take months to find the right fit and get through all of the red tape. Some important questions to keep in mind and ask these contractors when inquiring about taking Are they equipped to handle your needs of packaging or product creation? How long will...
Some Maple Sap This Season Headed From Tree Tap to Beer Tap

Some Maple Sap This Season Headed From Tree Tap to Beer Tap

Everybody loves maple syrup on their flapjacks and waffles, maybe even on breakfast meats and eggs, but a new trend is emerging in the craft beer industry: Maple Beers The maple sap in Ron Davis’  New York sugar house has a destiny far more important than to be poured over a stack of pancakes, waffles, sweets. The destiny we’re talking about is beer of course. The syrup creates a touch of woodsy sweetness to the beer made by Chatham Brewing, one of many craft brewers all across the nation skipping the middleman in between tree tap and bar tap. The syrup headed for pint glasses from this spring’s maple run is a mere drop in the bucket, but maple beers create something new for the growing number of foodies and craft beer connoisseurs. Many maple beers are usually offered on a seasonal basis to coincide with spring maple runs or autumnal leaf falls. Hinterland sells its maple bock from January to April. Chatham’s maple amber is available all year long. And while craft brewers will add syrup at different points in the brewing process, Chatham head brewer Matt Perry pours it into to the maple amber after fermentation so that the syrup flavor comes through. He favors the darker, heavier syrup from later in the run. Recently at Chatham Brewing, Perry poured some of Davis’ sticky syrup slowly from a container into a stainless steel tank, allowing it to dissipate into the beer. Perry says the maple mixes better with a malty beer rather than the assertively hoppy beers popular now among craft drinkers, such as India Pale...

Coors Debuts Gluten-Free Beer, Coors Peak

Everyone is saying gluten is bad, and many Americans are inclined to agree apparently. MillerCoors is releasing a new all natural gluten free beer offered only in the Seattle and Portland markets for now. If the success grows like wildfire, expect to Coors Peak to be coming to a location near you later in the year.  With gluten free, veganism, and crossfit being all the rage these days, MillerCoors has entered the market by premiering Coors Peak, a new naturally gluten free amber lager that boasts an all natural recipe.  “With more drinkers pursuing a gluten-free lifestyle, we were inspired to create Coors Peak so that everyone can enjoy a great beer drinking experience,” – David Kroll,  Vice President of Innovations, MillerCoors.  MillerCoors has  recognized that consumers only were offered sorghum-based gluten-free beverages or chemically-treated gluten reduced drinks to pick from. MillerCoors brewers made the decision to brew the first-ever all natural gluten free option.  The all natural new gluten free beer is brewed with a proprietary process of malting brown rice, instead of the oft used barley. MillerCoors said this will give Coors Peak the refreshing taste, depth and complexity of normal beer whilst still being naturally gluten free.  “Coors Peak continues the Coors tradition of driving superior taste while highlighting our commitment to quality innovation. Our unique brewing process allows us to brew an inherently all natural gluten-free beer that is brewed separately from our other beers.” – David Kroll, Vice President of Innovations, MillerCoors....
