Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc., a super trendy Mexican quick serve restaurant (QSR), is currently under legal fire for their claim regarding genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Recently the company has been making the claim that they don’t use any GMOs for any of their menu items, and while plenty of people are in favor of this step toward natural food, you can’t please all the people all the time.
During the last week of August, Kaplan Fox and Kilsheimer LLP filed a class action lawsuit targeting Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. The suit was filed on the behalf of California customers who purchased food from the chain since April 27, around the time the claims regarding GMOs first started being made.
The suit claims that Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc.’s advertising and marketing campaign that states every item on the company’s menu is made without the use of genetically modified ingredients is deliberately misleading consumers. The law firm says that many of the items on Chipotle’s menu were produced using GMOs.
So far, representatives from Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. have declined to comment on the issue, but they do plan to fight back against these allegations.
However Chipotle’s website contains carefully placed disclaimers that the softd drinks they offer are made using corn syrup, which health conscious consumers should already know anyway. The disclaimers continue, with claims acknowledging that the meat the company uses meat that isn’t genetically modified, but the animals that the meat comes from are fed with GMO feeds.
